Finite type: deformations and modules

In thinking about various finiteness conditions on rings, certain examples come up again and again. Some of these conditions are algebraic, having to do with modules; others are geometric, having to do with the curve (or other geometric gadget) that the ring represents. It's odd and fascinating that these fundamentally different criteria lead to the same rings. I will talk about the examples, their history, and the various questions whose answers they are.
