Project 3, 20 points Math 314H, Spring 2000 Due: 4/3 Problem Description: For background read the discussion in the Least Squares project on page 175-176 of the text. You are going to carry out this project, but not with the Big Eight numbers. Rather, you are to determine a relative ranking of the top 16 finalists in the NCAA Division I Woman's Basketball Tournament. You will need to search the Web to find scores connecting these teams -- in particular, you want to end up with enough games to give you a system of rank 15 (you'll use the trick described on page 176 of text and the notebook to raise the rank to 16). You may run into some problems. If you find that a team has not played any other team in the top 16, you may omit that team from consideration. (It's probably not that good anyway, what with a cream puff schedule!) In this case, the total number of teams will decrease. Also, remember that multiple matches between two teams will increase the rank of the system by at most one. You can find all the information you need on the Web. Try, for example, Yahoo's site http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaw. Methodology: You should use Maple commands to build a notebook that solves the problem and is extensible. One should be able to insert some data at the top of the file and click your way to an answer. You should definitely consult the tutorial notebook LinAlgMaple5.ms for some ideas on system solving. Output: Return your results in the form of an annotated Maple notebook, which should have the name of the team members at the top of the file and an explanation of your solution in text cells interspersed between input cells, that the user can happily click his/her way through. This explanation should be intelligible to your fellow students, which should constitute your target audience. Here are the teams for Project 3: 1. Hain, Jump, Veomett 2. Beerman, Wolff, Kuskie 3. Chasek, Tran, Pelster 4. Fisher, Grow, Ortmeier 5. Gjonej, Kershner, Patten 6. Hewitt, Kleeb, Nabity 7. Anderson, Loschen, McNeil
