HOW TO GET TO THE WIEGANDS' CABIN
A. From Lincoln:
Take I-80 and I-76 toward Denver.
Leave I-76 at Exit 66B (US 34 west, toward Estes Park). You now have 80 miles (about 100 minutes) to go. As you approach Greeley, be prepared to switch lanes sporadically to stay on US 34. Continue on Route 34, through Loveland (last chance for groceries), then through the Narrows of the Big Thompson Canyon, to Drake. At the west edge of Drake (which is very near the east edge of Drake), take the well-marked road to the right, toward Glen Haven. Follow this road for 8 miles to beautiful downtown Glen Haven. Turn right (NW) at the General Store. After about 1/8 mile, take the left branch (Fox Creek, not North Fork). About half a mile from the General Store, take a sharp right up Hummingbird Hill Road. Our driveway (cleverly marked "Wiegand" and "55" (the address, not the speed limit)) is the first on the left.
Take the right branch of the driveway, as our house is the higher, larger of the two houses served by the driveway. (However, if our neighbors are not in evidence, you can park in their driveway.) The whole trip takes 7 hours and 42 minutes.
B. From Denver International Airport:
Head toward the airport exit. When you're past most of the
airport stuff but still sort of on the airport property, take E-470 north and west,
toward Boulder and Fort Collins. The 17-mile stretch of E-470 from the airport to the I-25 exit will cost you $4.00, but it's worth it if the people in your car value their time at more than a a total of $14 per hour.) Go north on I-25 (toward Fort Collins) for 29 miles to US 34. Take the dangerous west-bound exit (sharp right turn after dodging traffic on the on-ramp and, theoretically, slowing to 25 mph). Go west, through Loveland, etc. and follow A. The trip from DIA to the cabin takes 1:38.
If you don't want to rent a car, consider taking the Estes Park Shuttle. It costs $45 one-way and $85 roundtrip, and they will take you all the way to the cabin. (When you make the reservation, tell them you're going to a cabin half a mile from the Glen Haven General Store.)
A third option is to take RTD (AB bus) from the airport to Boulder, and convince another CCR-13 participant to pick you up. The bus trip costs $10, and you need exact change. Boulder is about an hour's drive from the cabin and is a much more pleasant place to hang out than DIA.
C. From Estes Park:
From the main intersection in the middle of town, take MacGregor Avenue north. Cross the US 34 bypass and continue to a sharp right-hand bend about a mile out of town. (Straight ahead is the MacGregor Ranch; don't go there.) Continue east on the Devils Gulch Road. About 5 miles from town you will encounter the dreaded switchbacks; take the 15 mph signs reasonably seriously. Continue another mile or so to beautiful downtown Glen Haven. Turn left at the General Store, and continue half a mile to the cabin, as in A. This trip takes 16 minutes.
