On Nonlocality, Surface Effects, and Numerical Integration
In this talk, I will discuss the surface effect in peridynamic models of elastic materials and review some methods proposed to reduce or eliminate the effect. I will also show how the interplay between the surface effect and the boundary conditions can lead to an interesting phenomenon: the exact classical solution at a point in time and space (for diffusion-type problems) can be obtained from two different sets of nonlocal/peridynamic solutions. This work is in collaboration with Dr. Quang Le and Dr. Ziguang Chen.
