-- The visit of Libby Beer.Thursday, October 2,
Abstract: In this talk I will explain how I decided to become a mathematician (I haven't always known I was going to be one!), the things and people that have been most helpful to me in my mathematical career so far, and some of the lessons I've learned in the process. Maybe you're sure you want a Ph.D. in math, or maybe you're just thinking about trying a math major on for size. Either way, you can get a lot of support from your fellow students and from people who have gone before you in the field -- sometimes in ways you never thought to ask about!
Libby Beer graduated from UNL in 2004 with a B.S. in mathematics, a B.A. with a triple major (history, classics, and medieval and Renaissance studies), and minors in computer science and religious studies. She is currently a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where she received her M.S.E in applied mathematics and statistics in 2006, and hopes to finish her Ph.D. in the same department this year. Libby has received a variety of awards, including UNL's Eastman Scholarship in mathematics, JHU's Dean's Fellowship in Engineering, and the National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (similar to the NSF Fellowship); she was also a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship in 2003. Libby has participated in a number of summer math programs and internships, including the Carleton Summer Math Program for undergraduate women, and was co-president of WUMN as an undergraduate.
