Math Research Opportunities for Undergraduates

The MAA's page for students lists many opportunities, and the AMS has a large list of internships.

Academic Year

Undergraduate Creative Activities and Research Experiences (UCARE)
This UNL program is designed to promote undergraduate research by having students work on a research project with a faculty mentor. Application deadline for AY2009-2010 is Feb 13, 2009.
Research for Undergraduates in Theoretical Ecology (RUTE)
The RUTE Scholars program is a structured research program for teams of undergraduate students and faculty mentors. Each team has two biology or natural resources students and two mathematics students along with at least one biology or natural resource mentor and at least one mathematics mentor. Projects run from January through December. The program includes a 10-week summer field research experience, with a stipend of $3600 for the summer research experience.
Honors Thesis
Many students in the University Honors Program do their senior theses under the direction of math faculty.
But many opportunities are available outside these programs!
Talk to a faculty member about the work they are doing or talk to the Chief Undergraduate Advisor.

Summer Programs

Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs)
Math REU Sites from the National Science Foundation
These programs are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Typically, 6–8 students go to a university site to work with a mentor on a project that involves mathematical research. The duration is about 8 weeks. Travel, room and board are covered and you get paid $2000–$3000. There are about 20 sites in math; most deadlines are in mid February.
National Security Agency (NSA)
Several summer programs very similar to the REUs. Highly competitive.
Other Federal Agencies
There are education programs and internships in math and science at various Federal labs, including NIST and NASA. You must be a US citizen.
Summer Program for Women in Mathematics
For women ending their junior year who are interested in working with other women in a supportive research environment.
The Carleton Summer Math Program for Women
For women who have finished their second (sophomore) year of college, this NSF sponsored program is designed to support and encourage women in their study of mathematics.
Summer Undergraduate Applied Mathematics Institute
Held at the Center for Nonlinear Analysis at Carnegie Mellon University, in addition to a stipend participants receive credit from Carnegie Mellon for this 7-week learning and research experience.
The Mathematical and Theoretical Biology Institute Summer Program
The MTBI is located on the campus of Arizona State University. This intensive eight-week summer research experience for undergraduates prepares promising young scientists interested in working at the interface of mathematics, statistics and the natural and social sciences for the rigors of graduate studies.
Research in Industrial Projects for Students (RIPS) Summer Program
This program involves applied mathematics problems from industry.
