UNL's Advanced Placement Institute: June 23-28, 2002

Thanks to research provided by Lincoln Public Schools Foundation, Gallup, and Public Education Network, early findings indicate that Lincoln Public Schools consistently hires certified teachers and staffs schools equitably.

Therefore, Lincoln has taken the next steps of exploring quality teaching characteristics and future challenges by conducting focus groups with 314 parents, community groups, and outstanding teachers. A sampling of the research results are listed below.

The Lincoln community believes quality teachers:

  • Connect interpersonally, relating with empathy, patience and humor
  • Engage others, networking among community, parents and school
  • Individualize, adapting to each student's abilities, learning style, background and motivation
  • Learn over a lifetime, constantly growing and adapting
  • Work with passion, making a difference in each student's life!
The Lincoln community believes the greatest challenges to future teaching quality are:
  • Consistent funding
  • Respect for cultural and economic diversity
  • Recruitment and retention
