| Did you know that the international headquarters for the American
Mathematics Competitions (AMC) is located in Lincoln, Nebraska, on
the campus of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln? Many Nebraska mathematics
teachers will know that fact, since in November 2001, 117 Nebraska
schools with over 7,500 students took the AMC 8 mathematics contest
for middle school students. In spring of 2001, 107 Nebraska schools
and over 7,300 students took the AMC 10 and AMC 12 contests for high
school students. The American Mathematics Competitions is an operation
of the Mathematical Association of America, the largest professional
society of collegiate mathematicians, in cooperation with 16 other
sponsors, including the NCTM. The American Mathematics Competitions
is dedicated to strengthening the mathematics capability of young
people by identifying, recognizing and rewarding excellence in mathematics
through a series of contests.
With the cooperation of a national panel of mathematicians and
teachers, the AMC operation in Lincoln creates, prints, handles,
stores, ships, grades, and summarizes over 450,000 tests and sends
intramural awards to over 6,500 schools in the United States, Canada,
Taiwan, Japan, Europe and South America. The contests are challenging,
fun, and stimulating, and it all starts here. For more information,
