Conference Introduces Girls to Science Careers

The Center for Science, Mathematics and Computer Education will join Nebraska EPSCoR to sponsor the Women in Science Conference March 23 -24, 2000. The conference invites young women from high schools across Nebraska and other EPSCoR states to UNL where they will meet with role models, hear speakers, visit laboratories, and tour other scientific work sites. The keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Sherilyn Fritz of UNL's Department of Geosciences and the School of Biological Sciences. Dr. Fritz's research integrates biological, geological, and atmospheric sciences and uses fossil organisms preserved in lake sediments to reconstruct both climate change and the impacts of environmental pollution. She has active research projects all over the world.

While at the conference, students hear from panels of women who are scientists on campus as well as women scientists from business and industry. Students also will have an opportunity to meet with graduate and undergraduate students to learn more about college life and how to prepare to succeed in majors related to science and mathematics. Students are guided through a variety of laboratory settings or other scientific work sites by women faculty or other science professionals to build on their understanding of the work scientists do and of the opportunities in scientific fields. Previous participants have reported the event dispelled some of the myths about science careers for women and encouraged them to pursue their interests in a variety of fields.
