Ecospheres Welcomes Teachers, Students

An international conference to be held in Lincoln June 10-13, 2001, seeks to encourage holistic thinking on environmental issues by persons from diverse backgrounds, including school officials, teachers and students.

With activities centered at the Embassy Suites hotel, the Ecospheres conference will target connections and relationships between the issues of land, water, populations and culture, technology and the environment.

Primary objectives for the conference include building awareness of the issues and interdependencies of land, water and populations; involving members of the community whose voices are not usually represented in these issues; and providing local, regional and national youth with an opportunity to help determine the direction for a sustainable future.

Speakers at the 3 1/2 day conference include Nebraska Gov. Mike Johanns; Roger Kennedy, former director of the National Park Service; and Werner Fornos, president of The Population Institute.

A concurrent session for youth will be held June 11-12. In partnership with The Groundwater Foundation, youth participants will join other conference attendees for keynote presentations by Lester Brown, chairman of the Worldwatch Institute; Richard Swett, U.S. Ambassador to Denmark; and Susan Seacrest, president of The Groundwater Foundation.

Teachers (K-12) and students (9-12) interested in participating in Ecospheres should contact the Division of Continuing Studies and request a teacher/student form. Special registration rates of $10/day per individual with the option of attending the banquets at $25 each will apply to all teachers who qualify. Teachers will qualify for the special rate if they bring students with them (recommended 2-3 students). The rate for students is $25, inclusive of the day and a half program and the dinner with Lester Brown on June 11. There will be a limit of 50 students taken on a first-come, first-served basis. E-mail your request for application materials to acpp1@unl.edu. Hotel accommodations are not included in the special rates. Ecospheres is also offering a limited number of need-based scholarships for individuals who wish to attend the program. Each scholarship recipient will be awarded complimentary full registration. E-mail your request for application materials to acpp1@unl.edu. Hotel accommodations are not included in the scholarship.
