| A new scholarship program for Computer Science, Electrical Engineering,
and Mathematics and Statistics majors at UNL will begin in the Fall
of 2001. The program will fund 40 scholarships of $3,125 per year
for 2 years. To be eligible a student must be a junior, senior, or
graduate student, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average,
and have considerable financial aid need.
Although any student meeting the above criteria is eligible for
the scholarship, the goal of the program is to attract new students
to campus in traditionally underrepresented groups. These groups
include women, ethnic and racial minorities, and students from disadvantaged
rural communities. The scholarship is part of a support package
which also includes a seminar class, opportunities for tutoring,
personal mentoring, and introduction to contacts in industry. Graduates
of this program will meet a growing need for information technology
personnel in the workforce.
More information on the CSEMS program and application forms can
be obtained from the web site at http://www.unl.edu/csems.
For full consideration applications are due by April 15, but will
still be accepted after this date. Students may also request information
by E-mail from the program's contact person Marilyn McDowell at
mmcdowel@unlnotes01.unl.edu.
The program is funded by the National Science Foundation. Dr. Gordon
Woodward of the Mathematics Department and Dr. Kevin Lee of the
Department of Physics and Astronomy have assumed lead roles in establishing
the program. Those who prepared the successful proposal included
Center Director Sandy Scofield; Dr. Stephen Goddard and Dr. Bryav
Ramamurthy, both of the Computer Science and Engineering Department;
and Lucinda Zmarzly of the Mathematics Department. |
