Conference Helps Teachers Address Controversy

June 8, 2001 is the day for the "Evolution: Science in an Atmosphere of Controversy" conference. This event is hosted by the Center for Science, Mathematics, and Computer Education through funding from the Dwight D. Eisenhower Professional Development Program. The one-day conference offers Nebraska science teachers (grades 6-12) the opportunity to add to their content knowledge and increase the number of strategies they have to teach good science. In addition, this conference will help teachers develop a network with other science teachers and higher education content experts to provide ongoing discussion opportunities on how to respectfully deal with differing points of view.

Speakers for the conference include Carl Zimmer, an award-winning science writer; Steven Lopes, President of Kansas Citizens for Science; and Dr. Alan Kamil, Professor of Biological Sciences and Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In addition to the speakers, participants will attend two of six interactive, repeatable workshops. Registration is free. Lodging is available for participants traveling in excess of 100 miles roundtrip. The conference will be held at the downtown Lincoln Holiday Inn.

You may register for the conference at http://www.nde.state.ne.us/NMSI. For more information please contact Cindy Larson-Miller via e-mail at clarson@unlserve.unl.edu or by phone 402/472-8965
