Teens Explore Careers and Leadership at ExpoVisions

Youth aged 14-19 learned about a variety of careers and enhanced their leadership skills this summer at ExpoVisions, a three-day conference held on the UNL campus. The conference offered 69 different "learnshops," career tours, and special programs. Each attendee selected six activities in which to participate. Learnshops included such titles as "What’s inside? Using Ultrasound Technology in Beef Cattle" and "Riddles, Puzzles, and other Serious Stuff." Many learnshops consisted of hands-on activities, such as "Diagnostic Toxicology in Veterinary Medicine: Here’s Lookin’ at You," which gave the students an opportunity to dissect an animal’s eye. Career tours included Textron Turf Care, the Nebraska State Penitentiary, KOLN/KGIN TV, St. Elizabeth’s Regional Medical Center, and the National Weather Service. All students participated in afternoon activities such as a trip to the Old Market and Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, a Missouri Riverboat Cruise, and painting murals and signs for the Nebraska State Fairgrounds. The conference concluded with a dance and banquet.

Students interested in participating in EvpoVisions 2000, held July 12-14, should contact their local extension office or the state 4-H office at (402)472-2805.
