High School & College Computer Curriculum Discussed

High school computer teachers spent three days on the UNL campus this summer studying computer science curricula. Participants at the workshop discussed the new UNL course Computer Science Fundamentals, a course and lab that survey general topics in computer science. Designed for majors and non-majors, Fundamentals is a prerequisite to higher-level computer science courses. Senior Lecturer in Computer Science Dr. Charles Riedesel encouraged the participants to incorporate similar courses into high school curricula.

Workshop participants also discussed programming languages, web design, and computer applications. The relationships between discrete mathematics and computer science were also studied. Teachers commented that the discussions were "an important exchange of information about how other schools approach computer science education."

The Math Science Education Area of Strength financed the workshop. The Center for Science, Mathematics, and Computer Education provided additional support
