| Educators, parents, and students may now access a Spanish translation
of the Nebraska Department of Education's mathematics standards. Three
UNL students double majoring in mathematics and Spanish conducted
the translation. The students were Sara Shadbolt, Mary Karel, and
Melinda Mohr. Melinda Mohr served as team leader. To ensure clarity
and fluency, the students consulted native Spanish speakers from UNL
and from the community. The Center for Science, Mathematics, and Computer
Education provided funding for the effort.
Dr. David Fowler, Associate Professor of Secondary Mathematics
Education, hopes that the translated standards will "help include
the Hispanic community in the development of mathematics education
in Nebraska." According to Dr. Fowler, "Translation is
an on-going process. As with any document, there may be a need for
revised translations in the future. To do this job well, we needed
people who understood three languages: mathematics, Spanish and
English. We are very pleased with the initial results." Fowler
also speculated on some future directions: "It's interesting
to consider the possibility of establishing a Mathematics and Science
Translation Center that could translate similar documents for other
state agencies."
Those interested in obtaining a copy of the translated mathematics
standards should contact State Mathematics Consultant Deb Romanek
at 402- 471-2503; a local Educational Service Unit; or the Center
for Science, Mathematics, and Computer Education at 402-472-8965.
