Science Day 2002 will be April 6th

The University of Nebraska Lincoln (UNL) is hosting the third annual Science Day on April 6, 2002 from 9:30am -12:30pm. Science Day 2002 will give students grades 6-12 an opportunity to participate in hands-on, interactive science activities on the UNL city campus. UNL professors and students will be presenting activities and available to discuss what UNL has to offer prospective science students. Science Day is held in conjunction with the Nebraska Science Olympiad competition however you do not need to compete in Science Olympiad to participate in Science Day. All activities are free and open to the public. A schedule of events is available(click here). For more information please contact Cindy Larson-Miller at 402-472-8965 or clarson@unlserve.unl.edu.

LAST YEAR
Last year, on March 31st of 2001, UNL welcomed high school students from across Nebraska to Science Day. Participating students enjoyed a variety of interactive activities. The events were held in conjunction with the State Science Olympiad Competition.

Dr. Norman Schneider of UNL Animal Sciences showcases the disection of a cow eye. The disection of the cow eye can be used in autopsy to determine the nitrate levels in the cow's blood.

This environmental sciences display simulates the contamination of groundwater. Food coloring is inserted at one point in the display. The food coloring flows through the rocks to reach and discolor the "groundwater."

Students at the Science Day make gummy worms as a part of the day's activities. The girls pull the stringy worms from a beaker where they had combined the neccessary components. Dr. Georgianna Whipple of the Food Sciences Department operated the table.

Support for Science Day

Science Day is made possible through major funding from the UNL Mathematics and Science Education Area of Strength in the College of Arts and Sciences; scholarship support from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and the departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Food Science and Technology, Geosciences, Physics and Astronomy, and the School of Natural Resource Sciences. The Center for Science, Mathematics & Computer Education povides staff support. Science Olympiad is a partnership with the Nebraska Department of Education, Nebraska Academy of Sciences, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
