Plans for first day of class

Introduction
      
Distribute to all students:
  1) Blank information sheet
  2) Approximate schedule
  3) Class policies sheet
  4) Journal description sheet, if not included in class policies sheet

Go over information on the schedule, class policies and journal comments. 
Have information sheets filled in and returned.  If you are going to have
three exams, have students think about exam policy (some sections have had
evening exams and/or exams during dead week) with the class to agree on
specifics later in the week.

Have students form groups of three and individually read the Two Excerpts
sheets.  Allow time for discussion in the small groups to consider the
questions on page two.  As time allows, have the groups report their main
points to the whole class.  Distribute the Reading Mathematics sheets and make
brief appropriate comments.

Assignment for next class
  1) Purchase text and read pages 1-4.
  2) Look over schedule and decide on exam timing.
  3) If asking students for a class-by-class journal, explicitly direct them
     to begin their journals: "Write at least a page on your previous
     mathematical experience and how you feel about it."
