Fall 2005 Math 314 Syllabus
Text: "Linear
Algebra: a modern introduction", 2nd Edition, Thomson Brooks/Cole (2006)
by David Poole.
Math lab:
Dealing with matrices can involve a lot of arithmetic.
Many of the calculations you'll need to do
for this class can be done on a calculator such as the TI-86.
Alternatively, one can use MAPLE, which is available
in the Mathlab (Lab
Schedule). You will be given an account so you can log on
to these machines. If you haven't used the lab before, or if you haven't
used MAPLE to do matrix arithmetic before, consider attending
one of the mathlab orientations;
a sign up sheet will be posted outside the lab door (Avery 18)
for the beginning part of the semester.
Syllabus:
The following syllabus shows the material expected to be covered and the
corresponding suggested problem assignments for each week of the semester.
Prior to each class you should determine what is to be covered
and read the relevant material in the book.
As soon as it is covered in class, you should
work the assigned problems (if not
also additional ones!).
Note that what is shown here is tentative; your particular instructor may well
announce changes in class throughout the semester.
Unlike the other exams, however, the time and date of the final exam is not
tentative and cannot be changed. The final exam is comprehensive
and everyone is required to take it.
You must arrange your personal and work schedules to allow you to take
the exam at the scheduled time.
