Spring 1999 Math 106 Syllabus

Calculator: You are required to have a graphing calculator for this course. The TI-85 or TI-86 is strongly recommended.

Reading: Please do the reading from the sections before coming to class each day.

Exercises: The assigned exercises should be worked after each lecture period and before the next class meeting.

Prerequisites: Your most recent grade in the prerequisite course must be C, P or better. If you had this prerequisite course in high school or some place other than UNL, UNO, or UNK, then you must also have a qualifying score on the UNL Math Placement Exam dated after March 1, 1998, or you must have previously received a grade of D or D+ at UNL, UNO or UNK in Math 104. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics will drop all students who do not satisfy this policy (see the Math Placement Policy on page 78 of the Spring Schedule of Classes).

Math Placement Exam Dates: A picture ID will be required. Calculators are allowed at the exam, but you must be on time. Mathematics Resource Center: The Mathematics Resource Center (MRC), in Burnett 106, offers assistance to students who have questions related to any precalculus or calculus course offered by the Department. Students in Math 106 may use the MRC to ask questions or as a place to meet and discuss group projects. The MRC is open 12:30-8:30 pm Monday through Thursday and 12:30-2:30 pm Friday.

Gateway Exam: This exam will consist of 10 questions in which students are asked to carry out calculations without using calculators, notes or tables. You must get at least 8 problems completely correct to pass the exam and obtain full credit. If you do not pass the Gateway Exam when it is first administered, you must go to the Math Lab for a retake (a picture ID will be required). You may attempt the Gateway Exam at most once a day. The deadline for passing the Gateway Exam is Friday, April 23, 1999 and will be announced in class. The Gateway Exam will count 50 points toward your semester grade.

Project: A two part project will be assigned. Part A will be brief and completed individually. Part B will build on Part A and will be carried out in small groups.

All Math 106 students are required to take a common comprehensive final examination unless a specific announcement to the contrary is made. The Final Exam is Monday, May 3, 1999, 6:00pm - 8:00pm, in a room to be announced during the last week of class. You are expected to arrange your personal and work schedules to allow you to take the exam at the scheduled time. Students with conflicting exam schedules may be allowed to take an alternate final, which is always given after the regularly scheduled final.
On-line homework resource: If your web browser handles java, you can access on-line graphing calculators to help with your homework. (These on-line calculators have better resolution and, once loaded, will probably be faster than your hand-held graphing calculator.) There are three on-line calculators:
