Virtual Consoles
Sometimes, you may just want to check your mail and don't want to fully login with the graphical interface. There is a way to do this---virtual consoles.
To access a virtual console, press Ctrl--Alt--FX, where X is 1--6. You will now be presented a simple text log-on.
To get back to the graphical interface, press Ctrl--Alt--F7
