Solving Puzzles for Document Image Recognition

Solving cryptograms involves decoding a substitution cipher. The recreational value of this activity far exceeds its usefulness in cryptography. However, cryptograms have an important application in optical character recognition. In this talk I will discuss this and similar other applications of puzzle solving that I have encountered in my work on document image analysis.
